EXHAUST & EMISSIONS SYSTEM REPAIR
Exhaust & Emissions Services:
- Check-engine-light diagnostics for emissions-related trouble codes.
- OBD-II scanning to evaluate trouble codes and emissions readiness monitors.
- Diagnosis and replacement of faulty oxygen sensors.
- Catalytic converter testing, repair, and replacement when necessary.
- Evaporative emissions system leak detection and repair.
- Inspection and service of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) components.
- Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve inspection and replacement.
- Diagnosis of engine misfires, rich or lean fuel mixtures, and incomplete combustion.
- Diagnosis of exhaust leaks, excessive noise, unusual odors, and performance concerns.
- Inspection of exhaust pipes, mufflers, resonators, heat shields, flanges, clamps, and hangers.
- Repair or replacement of damaged and deteriorated exhaust-system components.
- Post-repair testing to confirm that the system is operating properly.
Your vehicle’s exhaust and emissions systems work together to safely direct exhaust gases away from the vehicle, reduce engine noise, control harmful emissions, and support efficient engine performance. When either system develops a problem, you may notice a check engine light, reduced fuel economy, excessive exhaust noise, unusual odors, rough running, or decreased performance.
Central Auto Repair Shop provides exhaust and emissions-system diagnostics and repairs for gasoline-powered cars, trucks, SUVs, and hybrid vehicles. Our technicians use modern diagnostic equipment and careful inspection procedures to identify the source of the problem before recommending repairs.
Our Exhaust & Emissions Services
- Check Engine Light Diagnostics: We scan your vehicle’s computer for emissions-related trouble codes and perform additional testing to determine what caused the code. A trouble code identifies the affected system but does not always identify the exact part that needs replacement.
- Exhaust Leak Detection and Repair: Exhaust leaks may produce ticking, rattling, roaring, or hissing sounds. They can also allow exhaust fumes to enter areas where they do not belong. We inspect accessible exhaust pipes, connections, flanges, clamps, and other components to locate leaks and damage.
- Muffler and Exhaust Component Service: Rust, road debris, failed hangers, and normal wear can damage mufflers, resonators, pipes, heat shields, and related hardware. We repair or replace damaged components when appropriate to restore safe, quieter operation.
- Catalytic Converter Service: A failing catalytic converter can reduce performance, trigger a warning light, produce unusual odors, and increase harmful emissions. We test the converter and related components before recommending replacement.
- Oxygen Sensor Service: Oxygen sensors help the engine computer regulate the air-fuel mixture. A faulty sensor can contribute to poor fuel economy, rough performance, increased emissions, and catalytic converter damage.
- Evaporative Emissions Repairs: The evaporative emissions system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. We can diagnose leaks and inspect related hoses, valves, seals, and other components.
- EGR and PCV System Service: Problems with exhaust gas recirculation or crankcase ventilation can affect engine performance and emissions. We inspect and service these components when equipped.
- Misfire and Fuel-Mixture Diagnostics: Engine misfires and incorrect air-fuel mixtures can increase emissions and damage catalytic converters and other components. We identify the underlying ignition, fuel, air-intake, or mechanical problem.
Signs of an Exhaust or Emissions Problem
- The check engine light is on or flashing.
- Your vehicle fails an emissions inspection.
- The exhaust becomes louder than usual.
- You hear rattling, ticking, roaring, or hissing beneath the vehicle.
- You notice a strong fuel, sulfur, or exhaust odor.
- The engine idles roughly, hesitates, or misfires.
- Fuel economy decreases unexpectedly.
- Exhaust smoke changes in color or amount.
- The vehicle feels sluggish or loses power.
- An exhaust pipe, muffler, or heat shield appears loose or damaged.
If you smell exhaust fumes inside the passenger compartment, avoid driving the vehicle and call the shop for guidance. Exhaust gases can pose a serious safety risk.
Accurate Diagnostics Before Repairs
An emissions-related warning light does not automatically mean that the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. Loose fuel caps, leaking hoses, exhaust leaks, faulty sensors, ignition problems, and fuel-system issues can produce similar symptoms. We carefully diagnose the system before recommending repairs.
If your check engine light is on, your exhaust has become unusually loud, or you suspect an exhaust or emissions-system problem, call Central Auto Repair Shop at (219) 242-8213. We’ll identify the problem, explain what we find, and recommend the appropriate repair.
